The president of Ecuador estimated that nearly 80,000 members of criminal organizations threaten national security, while the country has about 57,000 police officers and 36,000 military personnel. In response, the National Assembly approved military intervention to strengthen the fight against organized crime. Discussions have also taken place between the armed forces of Ecuador, Colombia, and the United States to coordinate actions against these transnational groups.
