In the face of devastating fires that have destroyed over a thousand square kilometers of forest, Indonesia is temporarily suspending access to several national parks. Among them is Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where 170 hikers had to be rescued. Authorities are citing prolonged drought and the El Niño phenomenon as causes of this situation. Other parks remain partially accessible under strict supervision.
