An Ecuadorian court found former President Moreno, who led the country from 2017 to 2021, guilty of his involvement in an illegal payment system related to the construction of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant. In addition to the prison sentence, he will have to repay three times the amounts received unduly and is permanently ineligible. Several family members and associates have also been sentenced.
