Every September 5th, Guatemala commemorates National Quetzal Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the protection of this iconic bird. Educational activities and ceremonies will be organized by various institutions. Considered sacred by pre-Hispanic civilizations, the quetzal is linked to legends and Maya history. However, it is currently threatened by the destruction of its natural habitat.
