France has reaffirmed its sovereignty over Matthew and Hunter Islands, contested by Vanuatu, during the Pacific Islands Forum. Éléonore Caroit, the delegated minister, specified that Paris will respond to Vanuatu's request before the International Court of Justice. Discussions between the two countries, initiated in 2025, have been suspended to avoid conflict with the elections in New Caledonia.
