The International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) is working on innovative methods to help Jamaican farmers extend the shelf life of their crops. Using a gamma irradiator, treatments are being tested to improve the quality of fruits intended for export. At the same time, research on the mutagenesis of crops aims to develop varieties better suited to local conditions, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Jamaican products in the international market.
